Creating An Oklahoma Women's Caucus
Four YWCAs in Oklahoma ~ Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Ardmore and Enid ~ have received a grant from the Women's Foundation of Oklahoma to train and empower Oklahoma women "to become effective advocates whose united voices will create understanding and impact public policy relative to the economic status of women and children."
One of the outcomes of this project is to create an Oklahoma Women's caucus to lobby the state Legislature on issues impacting women and girls in Oklahoma.
In 2006-2007, these YWCAs will host meetings in select Oklahoma communities that will include area educators, legislators and their aides, YWCA clients, local community leaders, YWCA Board Members and YWCA staff. The goal of these meetings is to build a coalition of Oklahomans interested in improving the status of women and girls in the state. Participants will be trained on the advocacy process. There will then be a one-day meeting at the State Capitol - sponsored by a newly formed "Oklahoma Women’s Caucus" including a lunch with Oklahoma legislators to advocate for select issues.
