Arnold, Helen (1927- )
Helen Arnold (1927- ) earned a BS degree from Kansas State University. A Republican from Tulsa, she served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981.

Askins, Jari (1953- )
Born in Duncan, Jari Askins (1953- ) is the first woman to serve as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives. She has served in all three branches of government. she was inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame in 2001. Read more>>

 

Atkins, Hannah Diggs (1923- )
Oklahoma City resident; first African-American woman elected to the Oklahoma State House of Representatives (1968-1980); first woman to serve as chair of a committee; later served as Assistant Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Oklahoma Cabinet Secretary for Social Services, Oklahoma Secretary of State and United States Ambassador to the United Nations.When she retired in 1991 from her joint positions of secretary of state and secretary of human resources, she was the highest-ranking woman in state government. Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame (1983).

Born in Ada; First Lady of Oklahoma; First Lady Of University of Oklahoma. One of Oklahoma’s first women judges and one of the youngest judges in state history ( Pontotoc County). One of the first women to serve on the Oklahoma Bar Association’s board of trustees.

Boyd, Betty Carman
Early Tulsa television personality; served in Oklahoma House of Representatives (Democrat - District 23 - Tulsa) from 1991 to 2000

 

Boyd, Dr. Laura
Marriage and family therapist. member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives (Democrat - District 44 - Norman) from 1993 to 1998. Credited with creating the State's College Savings Plan , programs addressing child abuse and elder abuse, removal of the car tag requirement, Quality Jobs Act. Unsuccessful candidate for Governor (1998) and Lieutenant Governor (2002). Married to David Rambo; children Susan Rebecca and Brooke Caitlin.

Brenner, Hannah
Runs National Education for Women (N.E.W.) Leadership institute for undergraduate women and The Pipeline Project (campaign training for women); teaches for the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Broaddus, Cindi
Duncan resident; victim of a tragic act of violence when an unknown assalant dropped a jar of sulfuric acid from an overpass that came through her car windshield leaving her with burns over much of her body; lobbyied for Cindi Broaddus Act which makes it illegal to throw anything from an overpass. Author of A Random Act: An Inspiring True Story of Fighting to Survive and Choosing to Forgive (Harper Collins); travels and lectures; and sits on the foundation of her brother-in-law, "Dr. Phil" McGraw. Honored by Oklahoma Hospitality Club (2006).

From Ardmore; headed June Brooks Oil and Gas Company; served on Interstate Oil Compact Commission. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (1982).

Bross, Masie
Founded in 1996 and runs after-school reading program "Whiz Kids". Now serves over 500 inner city children at 40 churches and 20 schools.

Brown, Linda
Ponca Citian Linda Brown is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Evans & Associates Enterprises Inc. and was recognized by the Journal Record in 2004 as one of the "Fifty Making a Difference."

Buckmaster, Heather
Heather Buckmaster is Executive Director of the Oklahom Beef Council. A native of Hydro, she previously served with the Peace Corps in Gambia, Africa and was marketing director of the Colorado Beef Council.

Carson, Julie
Born in Kansas, MO, Julie Carson graduated from Jenks High School and holds a bachelor's degree in ecomonics from Vanderbilt University and a law degree from the University of Tulsa. She was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in 1998. She worked for Superstar Satellite Entertainment (now TV Guide) and MCI WorldCom. She worked as treasurer for the congressional campaigns of her husband, Brad Carson, and has been active in numerous community programs including Board of Directors of the Claremore Public School Foundation, Rogers State College Community Advisory Board, Tri-County Court-Appointed Special Advocates and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Rogers County. She is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma. She and her husband Brad have one child, Jack David Carson. They live in Claremore.

Carter, Sue
Sue Carter of Norman was the first woman to edit Oklahoma Today. A former newspaper publisher in Lexington, she is credited with upgrading the magazine into a nationally recognized regional title. Under her guidance, the magazine won its first Magazine of the Year title (1991). "She proved in her pages that the Oklahoma experience is something unique, charming, and utterly special," per the "Making History a Page at a Time," in the 50th anniversary issue of Oklahoma Today (January-February 2006).

Caudill, Carolynn
Oklahoma County Court Clerk Carolynn Caudill was honored by the Journal Record in 2005 as one of the "Fifty Making A Difference" honoree.

 

 

Cauthron, Robin J.
US District Judge for the Western District of Oklahoma. Nominated by President George H.W. Bush, in 1991 to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089; confirmed by the US Senate on March 21, 1991, received commission on March 25, 1991.

Cavanaugh (Clark), Linda
First female news co-anchor of the evening news on Oklahoma City’s NewsChannel 4 KFOR-TV. Member of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame and recipient of elevan Emmys.

Chancellor, Andrea
Chancellor is general manager for corporate communications for Public Service Company of Oklahoma. She was recognized by the Journal Record in 2004 as one of the "Fifty Making a Difference."

Chenoweth, Kristin (1968- )
Born in Broken Arrow; singer-actress; won Tony-award for Broadway performance as Sally in the musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Was in three films in 2005; appeared regularly in the TV series The West Wing. Bachelor's degree in musical theater; master's degree in opera performance from Oklahoma City University.

 

Chouteau, Yvonne (1929- )
Born in Vinita; began dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1943; founding director of Ballet Oklahoma in Oklahoma City; helped develop the University of Oklahoma’s dance program. Of Cherokee, Shawnee and French heritage; youngest inductee into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame (1947).

Christiansen, Kay
One of the first women in Oklahoma to be elected District Attorney (was Pottawatomie County District Attorney from 1996 to 2002). Currently executive director of Bethesda, Inc which specializes in healing the trauma of childhood sexual abuse.

Chupack, Cindy
Born in Tulsa; writer and executive producer for HBO television series Sex and the City; previously wrote and co-produced Everybody Loves Raymond. Author of The Between Boyfriends Book and numerous articles for Glamour, Harper's Bazaar and Allure magazines. Journalism degree from Northwestern University.

Coats-Ashley, Judge Nancy
Recently retired from District Judge position in Oklahoma County. Named outstanding judge of the year; founded the Drug Court in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (2005).


Cobb, Geraldine “Jerrie “ M. (1931- )
Named America’s top pilot (1959). Between 1957 and 1960, set four world records -- for speed, distance, and absolute altitude. First woman chosen by NASA to undergo the same physical and psychological fitness tests as male candidates for the Mercury Project; she did so well, NASA asked her to recruit other women but, the US stuck with a policy of no female astronauts, so she never got to go into space. Inducted into Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame. Humanitrian projects to Amazon jungle and elsewhere earned her numerous awards and a nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1981.

Coffey, Marsha E.
Coffey is vice president and regional manager of Intrust Bank in Oklahoma City. She has been recognized by the Journal Record several times as one of the "Fifty Making a Difference" and, in 2004, was one of their Circle of Excellence honorees.

Cohen, Sara Ruth
Oklahoma City teacher, arts advocate and leader of the Jewish Community. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (1986).

Coleman, Carolyn Irwin (1952- )
Born in Oklahoma city; served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives (Republican - District 53 - Moore) from 1990 to 2002. Graduated from Crooked Oak schools; attended Rose State College and Southwestern Bible College.

Davis, Lori A.

DeBruler, Wanda
President of DeBruler, Inc. consulting firm in Edmond; extensive experience in low-income energy issues. Worked six years as executive director and housing coordinator for the Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies and thirteen years working in various accounting and federal coordiation positions at the State of Oklahoma's Department of Commerce.

Decouteau, Ginger
Decoteau is founder of the Community Learning Council - a nonprofit that helps women escape domestic violence and achieve ecomonic self-sufficiency. She was recognized by the Journal Record in 2003 as one of "Fifty Making a Difference."

DeLacerda, Melissa

Eagan, Judge Claire V. (1950- )
Served as US Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma from 1998 to 2005. Graduate of Fordham University School of Law (1976); worked as a federal judicial law clerk to Judge Allen E. Barrow. Starting in 1978, associated with Hall, Estill, Hardwick, Gable, Golden and Nelson, P.C. of Tulsa. Has also taught at Tulsa University College of Law.

Eagleton, Norma (1931- )
Born in Wewoka and raised in Claremore; attorney. Elected Tulsa Finance and Revenue Commisssioner 1976 making her the first women elected to a voting position on the Tulsa City Commission. Governor George Nigh appointed her the first woman to serve on the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in 1979 where she served through 1986. Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame (1997).

Easley, Mary
Retired teacher, graduate of Friends University, Wichita, KS, (B.A). and Northeastern Oklahoma State University, (M.A.). Served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives (Democrat - District 78 - Tulsa) from 1997 to 2004. Currently serves in State Senate (2004 to present).

Easton McIntyre, Judy
Member of the Oklahoma State Senate (Democrat - District 11 - Tulsa) from 2004 to present. Born in Tulsa; BS and MS in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma; retired from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Eaton, Patty
Served as Executive Director of the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and Secretary of Environment for the State of Oklahoma. She previously served as Commissioner of Waterworks and Sewerage for the City of Tulsa. She ran for Mayor of Tulsa in 1986 but came in second with 36 percent of the vote in a race involving 20 candidates.

Edmondson, Linda Larason
Longtime civic leader Linda Edmondson has a Masters degree in Social Work and has worked for numerous nonprofits and worthwhile causes. She helped launch the Citizens League of Central Oklahoma, worked to promote ethics in medicine, and advanced programs to assist the elederly and those in the final phase of life (hospice, advanced directives, etc.) Daughter of civic leaders Bert and Margaret Larason, she is married to Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson.

Fallin, Mary

Farley, Gloria Stewart (1913- )
Historian and researcher of artifacts in her hometown of Heavener led to recognition of the Heavener Runestone as the product of ancient Vikings. Authored In Plain Sight: Old World Records in Ancient America. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (1982).

Fisher, Ada Lois Sipuel (1924- )
Native of Chickasha; successfully challenged University of Oklahoma School of Law's segregation policy to become the first African American woman to attend an all white law school in the South. Later appointed to the Board of Regents for the University of Oklahoma.

Floyd, Billie J.
Member of the Oklahoma Senate (District # 13 - Democrat) from 1985 to 1988.

Fleischaker, Pam
Columnist and contributing editor for the Oklahoma Gazette; served as a commissioner and vice-chair of the Oklahoma City Human Rights Commission. Authored American Woman: Lost and Found in Oklahoma. Bachelor Degree in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

Foreman, Lela

Frank, Kate
Muskogee teacher who - with help from the National Education Association - went to court to protect a teachers' right to free speech. First woman president of the Oklahoma Education Association; named 1972 National Retired Teacher of the Year. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (1982).

Frates, Mary
Born in Oklahoma City; founder and director emeritus of the Oklahoma Arts Institute. Still deeply engaged in the Oklahoma arts community.

Fream, Anita
CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma.

Free, Kalyn
Member of Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma; former District Attorney for Pittsburgh County. Founder and President of the Indigenous Democratic Network (INDN's) List, which recruits, trains, and funds Indian candidates and staff and mobilizes the Indian Vote throughout America.

Henryetta native Alice Ghostley (1926- ) is an actress and comedienne of stage, television, and film. Nominated for Tony as Best Featured Actress in a Play for her various characterizations in "The Beauty Part" in 1963. Won Broadway's 1965 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for Lorraine Hansberry’s "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window." Appeared in films including To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), The Graduate (1967), and Grease (1978). Played the character Esmerelda on the television show Bewitched and Bernice on Designing Women (1987-1993).

Born in El Reno, Harjo is President and Executive Director of The Morning Star Institute in Washington, DC where she works to defend the rights of Native Americans. She is a writer, poet, lecturer, curator and political activist. She is a founding trustee of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Darcie Hassis, along with Julane Borth, founded Oklahoma-based EWF International (formerly Executive Women's Forum) in 1998. Born in New York in 1953, Harris moved to Oklahoma with her former husband in 1976. She previously studed at San Diego State University, worked as an assistant buyer for a major department-store chain and served as Executive Director of Contact Crisis Helpline, Inc in Oklahoma.

Born in Lone Tree in Okmulgee County. In 1991 as a University of Oklahoma law professor, alleged US Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas had made unwelcome sexual advances to her when he was her supervisor at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the 1980’s. Her Congressional testimony brought national awareness to sexual harassment in the workplace and increased involvement of women in politics. BA Oklahoma State University; JD Yale University. Authored Speaking Truth to Power (1997). Teaches law at Brandeis University. Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame (1993).

Holland, Fern
Lawyer Fern Holland (1970-2004) was slain while helping women in Iraq gain civil rights. She was named Oklahoma Today magazine's Oklahoman of the Year for 2004. Following her graduation from the University of Oklahoma sheworked as a volunteer in children’s hospitals of Russia and South Africa. She returned to Oklahoma to earn a degree from the University of Tulsa Law School. She left a successful law practice to serve in the Peace Corps in Namibia and helped establish legal aid clinics for abused women in refugee camps in Guinea in West Africa before going to work for the Coalition Provisional Authority as a women's rights expert. Established after her death, the Fern L. Holland Charitable Trust seeks to provide economic and other support to those causes for which Fern gave her life.

In 1956, she and her husband, dancer Roman Jasinski, founded the Tulsa Ballet Theater. Helped develop dance programs in the Tulsa Public Schools, worked with Indian youth and promoted the dance heritage of Oklahoma.

Latting, Patience Sewell
When elected mayor of Oklahoma City in 1971, Latting became the first woman in the United States to be mayor of a city with a population of 350,000. She served as mayor until 1983. She also chaired the Oklahoma Congress of Parents and Teachers and was active in the League of Women Voters of Oklahoma. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1988 and was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at The Journal Record's 2003 Woman of the Year Banquet.

Lucid, Shannon (1943- )
Born in Shanghai, China and raised in Bethany. BA in chemistry and MA and PhD in biochemistry at University of Oklahoma. Became astronaut in 1979. Her extensive career at NASA includes five space flights. Holds record for the most flight hours in orbit by any non-Russian and for the most flight hours in orbit by any woman in the world. First and only woman to receive Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Named Oklahoman of the Year by Oklahoma Today (1996).

Melanie Macdonald has been the first woman President and CEO of Oklahoma City-based World Neighbors since April of 2004. Born in Canada, Macdonald was executive director of CUSO, the Canadian, non-governmental version of the U.S. Peace Corps, from1995 to 2000, where she oversaw a 30-country program. She worked from 1991 to 1995 as chief financial officer for the United Church of Canada before establishing her own consulting firm.

Mankiller, Wilma Pearl (1945- )
Native of Tahlequah. First woman elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation (1987). Re-elected in 1991 but stepped down in 1995 due to poor health. Recognized for rural development programs and bringing needed services to Cherokees. The tribal roles increased from 55,000 to 156,000 while she was Principal Chief. National Women's Hall of Fame (1993). President Clinton awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1998). Authored Mankiller: A Chief and Her People and co-authored Every Day is a Good Day: Reflections of Contemporary Indigenous Women.

Mann, Jewell Russell

McKerson, Mazola
Born in Bluff (in Choctaw County); settled in Adrmore in 1929. Began a catering company in her home in 1946. Operated The Gourmet Restaurant in Ardmore (1964-1997). Elected to the Ardmore City Commission in 1977 making her the first black as well as the first female to serve on the City Council. In 1979, she became the first black, female mayor of Ardmore. She was the first chairperson of the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (1997).

Mary Melon is the editor and publisher of The Journal Record Publishing Company in Oklahoma City. She moved to Oklahoma with her family in 1975 and graduated with a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1983. Miles-LaGrange, Vicki (1953- )
Born in Oklahoma City. Appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1994 making her the first African-American woman federal judge in the Tenth Circuit. President Clinton had previously named her the first woman U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma. She was also the first African-American female elected to the Oklahoma State Senate (1987-1994). Co-authored A Passion for Equality: The Life of Jimmy Stewart. Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame (2003). Born in Enid. Renowned opera star. BA in Music from Oklahoma City University (1971). Graduate studies at Julliard School of Music in New York. Named "Cultural Ambassador of Oklahoma" by Governor Brad Henry in 2004.

Peters, Susan Ryan
From Anadarko. Founded the Kiowa Indian School of Art. Organized an art club for talented young Kiowa and sent their paintings to the Nichols Taos Fine Art Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. In 1928, several of these artists received favorable reviews at international art exposition in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
